The main difference is that while Autozone is in business to sell parts, they will give you a list of parts based on the codes that come up from the scan reading. There's no testing of your parts to see which is in fact bad. You just start replacing them all until hopefully you figure out which is faulty. Well this can cost you thousands in "guesswork"😟 ........... On the other hand, with a knowledgeable mechanic, they can use more than a scan tool to really diagnose your problem. The code reader had a code P0300 so you bought spark plugs. The mechanic diagnosed the car and found it was vibration from a warn pulley causing the issue (true story). 😎 .............. Autozone can be a good starting point, but it's best to let the trained Auto mechanic diagnose the car properly! ..............
